Frequently Asked Questions

PRODUCT

A. Immunity Fuel is manufactured in Australia. All ingredients are Certified Organic and none of them have been genetically engineered. The wholefoods are combined with the bacteria and beneficial yeasts using an exclusive fermentation process, which ensures active, viable bacteria and pre-digested, natural nutrients. Only the finest grains, legumes, grasses, herbs, and spirulina available are used to make our products. The majority of ingredients are sourced in Australia with organic being an extremely high priority. Imported ingredients are only used when they cannot be sourced in Australia these supplies are thoroughly investigated to be assured of quality and that none are from genetically modified or engineered sources.

A. The bacteria in Immunity Fuel have been bred to withstand temperatures of up to 55°C for up to a week, and therefore Immunity Fuel does not need to be refrigerated to keep the bacteria alive. However as it is a food, for ultimate protection of the nutrients once opened you may wish to keep your Immunity Fuel refrigerated like any other food, or kept in a cool dry place.

A. The shelf life of Immunity Fuel is 2 years.

A. All of our products have the same strains of live bacteria and beneficial
yeasts in them, however the whole food ingredients are different.

A. Our bacteria come from fruits and vegetables, unlike many bacteria which is taken from faecal matter. In addition, our bacteria are organic and have not been genetically modified.

A. Every batch of Immunity Fuel is tested to ensure high numbers of active colony forming units (CFU) per gram. Each CFU has approximately 1 million bacteria in that colony (this is when there is enough bacteria to be visible as a colony and can then be counted). So if a batch test comes out at >10,000 live CFU's per gram, for example, that would mean that batch has a MINIMUM of 10 billion actual bacteria per gram. A child serving of 1/2 a teaspoon is approximately 1.5 grams so this would be a minimum of 15 billion bacteria, and an adult serving of 1 teaspoon is 3 grams which would be minimum 30 billion bacteria. These are minimum numbers as our bacteria are alive and so are multiplying all the time (live bacteria multiply every 20 minutes).

A. There are 13 strains of Lactobacillus Bacteria in Immunity Fuel and 2 beneficial yeast strains. These bacteria are organic and sourced from fruits and vegetables. (many other bacterias are cultured on dairy, animal faeces or produced genetically)
Eighteen years of research and $2.5m have been invested to evolve these bacteria into a super strain that are resistant to many of the things that could kill them.
The formula also contains all of their favourite foods so they do not compete with each other to protect their food source.
Immunity Fuel bacteria are alive when they go in so begin their job when they enter your mouth, an important place for friendly bacteria to populate.
Every batch of Immunity Fuel is tested to ensure high numbers of active colony forming units (CFU) per gram. Each CFU has approximately 1,000,000 (1 million) bacteria in that colony.

A. Immunity Fuel is manufactured via a natural fermentation process so the number of live bacteria will always vary, each batch will be different and it would be impossible to state a number of bacteria on the product label as live bacteria are constantly multiplying (and we would have to change our label for every batch!). This is why a batch test is important to ensure that there are actually LIVE bacteria in the product, this is much more important than a number. Most products that state a number of bacteria are freeze dried or in pill form where the bacteria are inert (and therefore not multiplying) when ingested, and need favourable gut conditions to reactivate in the gut, whereas Immunity Fuel is working from the moment it enters your mouth.

A. Probiotics usually don't cause major side effects in healthy individuals. However, you may experience minor symptoms such as gas, bloating or more frequent toilet trips which mean the probiotics are working and these symptoms will improve with time. Taking your probiotic at night may reduce these symptoms.

A. Immunity Fuel is an organic whole food so shouldn't have any effect on your medications however if you are concerned please consult with your health professional.

A. Candida Albicans is a yeast that we all have living in our bodies, it is completely natural and usually does not cause any issues. However, when there is an imbalance in your gut bacteria this allows the Candida to thrive and issues can start to appear. This over-population of yeast then presents itself in many different ways (such as thrush).  The key to solving this problem is to bring it under control by improving the balance of good gut bacteria, along with a change in diet. Beneficial yeasts such as Saccharomyces boulardii are influential in the treatment of Candida overgrowth, as they reduce inflammation and prevent the colonization of the Candida yeast in the gastrointestinal tract. Although S. boulardii is a yeast itself, studies have shown it to reduce the levels of C. albicans in the body, by up to 90%. See more in our blog "10 Tips to Rid Your Body of Candida"

A. There is no one answer to this as everybody is different and will respond differently. It will likely depend on your current diet and lifestyle as to the changes you may notice. Both nutrients and live bacteria are essential to good health so regardless if your body shows major changes or subtle ones the key is to replace bacteria daily and to saturate the body with nutrients.

A. Yes. Antibiotics are used to destroy harmful bacteria in the body causing infection. However they also kill off the good bacteria our bodies need to stay healthy. Therefore, a good probiotic like Immunity Fuel is imperative to be taken before, during and after a course of antibiotics to ensure a healthy balance of good bacteria in the body.

A. Immunity Fuel is not only a probiotic & prebiotic but is also a nutritious whole food source. These wholefoods are fermented which condenses the nutrients into an easily absorbed nutrient source. Also worth noting is that most multi-vitamins come in pill form which are often made with fillers and are difficult for the body to digest and get the full benefit from. We do not fortify any of our products with synthetic vitamins, so if you are wanting higher doses of certain vitamins you may need a supplement.

A. Digestive enzymes are important to be able to get all the goodness out of the food you eat, and your body’s organs are able to produce all the enzymes you need to digest carbs, protein and fat. Digestive enzymes such as Amylase, Protease & Lipase are secreted by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and the small intestine, and you can also get some digestive enzymes from the food you eat, such as raw fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts, whole grains, andlegumes. Getting your digestive enzymes out of your food however is really dependant on how much you chew your food. When you chew your food, enzymes such as Amylase, which is produced by the salivary glands, breaks complex carbohydrates to smaller chains to aid digestion. So, the single most important thing to do is to chew your food properly to ensure the maximum digestive enzymes are produced. Fermented foods such as Immunity Fuel, which contains multiple raw wholefoods is a great source of digestive enzymes to supplement those produced by your own body.

A. While Immunity Fuel does contain some fodmap ingredients such as chick peas and lentils, they are fermented which means the good bacteria have pre-digested the ingredients and the nutrients can be instantly absorbed into the cells. So the bacteria in the gut do not need to digest the ingredients (which is what produces gases such as hydrogen and methane causing the symptoms of IBS/ bloating etc) and you still get the nutrients often lacking in a low fodmap diet. With regards to the prebiotics in our products, molasses and liquid malt, these are high fodmap at 1 tablespoon per serve, however you would get a miniscule portion of this in 1 tsp of fermented powder. It is important to ensure when on a low FODMAP diet to still be getting prebiotics into the gut for the survival of your good bacteria.

A. What you may perceive as a negative reaction, is actually
the positive result of your body beginning to detox, and this is part of the process.
When your body starts receiving the good bacteria and vital nutrients direct to
the cells, it is able to eliminate toxins that have been stored in the cells
that aren’t needed. These toxins can be stored in many parts of your body, so
symptoms such as headaches or joint aches are not uncommon as the toxins are
being released from these areas. Bowel evacuation is one of the most common
symptoms of the body detoxifying, as the bacteria clean out the (on average)
5-7kgs of food that we eat and gets trapped in the colon. As the good bacteria
start to destroy the bad bacteria a healing response may follow. This is a good
sign - it means the body is detoxifying itself and it is important to continue
taking the product throughout the healing process to ensure the health benefits
are realised. Also drink lots of water to assist the elimination process.

A. Freezing has no effect on the bacteria so frozen smoothies are fine.

A. It takes years for the body to decline in health. When you start the road to recovery you walk back up the road of decline. You do not instantly move to good health, the body has to heal itself again and this takes time. Many experience the hit of feeling good and then as the body goes through its healing response you may feel bad for a while. If you had a particular problem that went away it may just have gone into dormancy. When the body starts to heal itself a battle erupts with the problem trying to survive and this battle is what is possibly being experienced as a feeling of “worse than ever". Follow the advice given in the healing response answer above.

A. Immunity Fuel is a Certified Organic food product, and therefore must be packaged in new, food grade packaging that passes food safety and organic certification guidelines. The packaging we use for each individual unit is plastic #2 - HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Products made of HDPE are reusable and recyclable. HDPE #2 is one of the only types of plastics now accepted for kerbside recycling in NZ.  HDPE plastic is very hard-wearing and does not break down under exposure to sunlight or extremes of heating or freezing, so is perfect for keeping our food products safe. Unlike more transparent forms of plastic, HDPE is opaque and more resistant to heat and is BPA free.
